OS X with NT, files lose their description

I have a single mac OS X users who connect to a NT server. We want to use SMB, and we can access the shares, but the files seem to loose their type description. He can not click on the files to open them up. Using afp, everything works fine.

I assume we are missing something simple, we just can't figure it out. There are also some OS 9 machines, so the fix can not have an impact on their functionality.

When you save the files, are you including the three digit extension? If not, try that.
