I bought a Gateway GT5654 back in February. The hard drive crashed (making clicking noises), so I bought a new 500 gig western Digital to replace the old one. I installed the new hard drive, booted up using the disk that came with the pc. It wouldn't read the system disk. (I called gateway and they are sending me a new copy in 4 to 6 weeks rofl.) The DVD drive wouldn't even spin up to try and read it. SO, I popped in an XP disk out of curiosity, and voila, it started reading the disk which turned out to be scratched, and wouldn't install completely. So I tossed the old XP disk. All I get now when trying to use the original disk is: can't read .ini or boot file. Ive checked in bios, and made sure everything was set and enabled, and have my boot order set to CD/DVD, then hard drive. Any ideas?
Thnaks in advance,

I am afraid that you are stuck until you get those disks from Gateway, or purchase a new XP CD, for the install...

Have you done a memory test. I've seen error trying to copy files from the CD during an OS installation being caused by bad memory. Something like cannot copy blahblah.file

You could have a problem with the optical drive, the CD itself or the memory.

<grin/> Got a good one for ya..... I ripped the Op disk to my laptop.... Burned it it, and Voila, Vista installed. Ive checked the original disk, and there's no scratches etc so.. Go figure.... I was missing some system files, but went to the "Hateway" support site and found them and installed to cabs.... Seems everything is up to par thus far. Thanks for speedy reply guys, I'll be popping in and out and seeing how I can help here.

Glad you got it up and running...
