os upgrade help

I have a mac with OS9 on it which won't allow the dvd writer to work.

Is this a known problem?

Will I have to upgrade to OSX?

If I have to do the upgrade is there any way of doing this without losing all of my seetings and preferences. Or lose as little as possible.

Your DVD writer should work fine, if it's a superdrive. If not, what software are you using to burn with? Did it come with any? Drivers? Have you tried toast?
