My work requires that I install AIX 5.1 regularly into different hosts. I was wondering if there was a method of putting the os on a master host and doing all installations from there rather than a cd. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I don't know enough about it to tell you how to do it, but look for "NIM" (assuming IBM kept it in AIX 5).

I've never heard anything about NIM. Do you know where I can find more information about it?

NIM works great with 5L and we already have a 5L master ready to do migrations when we get ready to make the move.

NIM needs a "gold image" which you would use to install your systems. I don't know how to do it, but it will load a complete system including user/passwd info. It also allows you to specify different oslevels, as long as they are lower than the master's oslevel. Our NIM master is also a LPP repository.

We use NIM to do our frequent system copies. We just restore a mksysb from whatever source system and NIM it to whatever target system.

It can get quite complicated, as in our case, but now that it's automated I can make a clone with just a few commands. IBM Certified -- AIX 4.3 Obfuscation
