I'm working with a couple of pSeries 630 Model 6E4 (7028-6E4) machines and I'm having problems installing AIX 5.1 and AIX 4.3.3 on to them. I can install AIX 5.2 and AIX 5.1 (Maintenance level 3) with no problems using CDs or NIM, but when I try to install AIX 4.3.3 or AIX 5.1 (no maintenance level) using CDs or NIM, the install fails to start. There does not seem to be any error messages and the system just seems to hang just before it would start the install. The machines have the latest firmware upgrade and there isn't anything wrong with the CDs and NIM resources. Any ideas on what may be causing this problem? Any help will be appreciated.

I'm pretty sure 4.3.3 isn't support on p630's and I think you had to be on a specific release of 5.1. I was thinking it had to do with something like the chipkill features, but I can't remeber off the top of my head.

pseries 630 and other later machines does not suppor 4.3.3 anymore, thats for sure. So i guess his true that you need to stick on your latest AIX version. Once you boot from 4.3.3, you would see funny things upon boot up and thats it. you wont have any options to install..

right, our p690s came with 5.1 from the factory and we left them that way due to lack of support. we upgraded our existing servers to 5.1.0-03 before copying the OS and DB.

p630 does not support AIX 4.3.3, minimum AIX 5.X requirements are below:

The Models 6C4 and 6E4 with LPAR support require AIX 5L Version 5.2 or AIX 5L Version 5.1 at Maintenance Level 3 (APAR IY32749).
In order to boot from the CD, make sure you have one of the following media:
 AIX 5L Version 5.1 5765-E61, dated 10/2002 (CD# LCD4-1061-04) or later
 AIX 5L Version 5.2 5765-E62, initial CD-set (CD# LCD4-1133-00) or later

Note: For systems that are not used in LPAR mode, AIX 5L Version 5.1 at Maintenance Level 2, plus APAR IY31315, is the minimum requirement.
In order to boot a non-LPAR system, the following CD is the minimum requirement: AIX 5L Version 5.1 5765-E61, dated
04/2002 (CD# LCD4-1061-03), although we recommend using the AIX versions mentioned previously.
