I have a question. The bank My company works with has set up a way to check fro fraud checks. When I attempted to use their system from a windows 98 over HTTPS, it wouldn't work. I then tried doing it from my machine a windows XP and it worked fine. Now both OS have the same browser version. I talked to their tech support and they told me that their system is incompatable with win 98. Now tell me if I'm wrong but if their "server software" seems to be a contact form where you upload the file, is it possible that the operating system wouldn't work? I'm finding it hard to beleive that their reasoning for the failure is that it's incompatible with win 98, since it's over the web and their is no software installed on the machine. What are your views on this? and is there a fix or recommendations?

Thanks

if it's HTTPS, my guess is it's 128k encryption - which is happily installed on XP, but 98 is probably languishing at 48k cipher strength.

possibly a javascript issue - maybe the win98 client didn't have JVM (Java Virtual Machine) installed.

perhaps they use an applet plugin requiring win xp.

web-sites can use a wide range of technologies, some of which are restrictive to one particular o/s or environment.

<marc> i wonder what will happen if i press this...[pc][ul][li]please give feedback on what works / what doesn't[/li][li]need some help? how to get a better answer: faq581-3339[/li][/ul]

Like manarth said, check the cipher strength first. HTTPS is a protocol that uses SSL (Secure Sockets Layer). In Internet Explorer, go to Help -> About IE. The second line down under the version is the cipher strength. It should be 128-bit.

If not, then you need to take the Windows 98 machine out to the Windows Update site and install all critical updates (except IE 6 unless you want it).

JVM (Java Virtual Machine) is also a possibility, though not likely. It is no longer available from Mi¢ro$oft and must be downloaded from
