Hi,

I am familiar with the PC environment but interested in understanding mac OS now....

ON an Imac with OS 9.x, system tends to freeze, what is exact OS patch if any available, or how do you go about troubleshooting ? (i searched apples' web site and didn't find much on OS9)

Also, other than tek-tips, what are some good website for mac users..

tia

I think the most recent OS9 is 9.2.2. The most recent update should be on the apple.com site.

Patching the OS is not a guarantee to resolve freezing. Can you describe the freezes?

Troubleshooting on a Mac is greatly simplified by Norton Utilities from symantec.com. You might also try the free TechTool Lite from versiontracker.com

Pre-OSX Mac problems are most often attributed to RAM settings and System Extensions...

Each program can have it's RAM allocation adjusted (select the program icon and hit COMMAND-I to get info and tweak RAM).

Extensions are the icons that appear at the bottom of the screen at boot. If you see any icons with a red X on them, there was a loading error. You can go to Apple Menu>Control Panels>Extension Manager to view these in detail.

Here are the two major Mac mags:

if you want a more chat like online mac environment, the chats at feature mac tutorials and opinion most weeknights (mine is monday at 8 PM pacific, 11 PM eastern called Upgrade Your Stuff, but an hour before that is New to the Mac) I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

thnx for your time and energy..Here's a few more Qs,if you are in the mood..

i)Where would one look to disable TSRs , if that's an option?

ii)Is it safe to power off a mac if it freezes ? In case of loss of boot files , can startup disks be made with or without 3rd pary apps ?

The problem is with the system generally freezing and I think it's AOL/internet related (using AOL5)..

iv) If i were to install new s/w, is there anything to be disabled prior to install ?

Thank you in advance

1) Extension Manager (one of the control panels) allows you to choose which extensions to load. I think it will help select the minimum need ed and save different selections

2) by deflault, it will run disk first aid (think scandisk)

4) no, I am not sure AOL has upgraded the mac client i a while but it should be safe to try!
