My company is going to purchase two new power mac G4's and would like to continue using OS 9.2 because we currently have programs which are not compatible with X. Are there any problems that I am going to run into if I format the drives on the new system and install 9.2 on them. I will be using the OS 9.2\X disks which came with the last mac we bought. That was when they included both OS's with the system and then you could chose to boot to 9.2 instead of OS X. Also, is going with duel procs a wast of money if I am not going to use OS X?

Apple maintains MacOS 9.2 will not work on any Mac redesigned in 2003. (see Footnote 9)

so it will not work with the newest G4 tower that has firewire 800 (it is not that it will not support the one feature, it will not wotk at all) but it does work with the previous 'mirrored drive door' tower

these Towers can boot MacOS 9

these Towers cannot boot MacOS 9

Dual Processors will be of use to Applications that know of and take advantage of multiple CPUs, but the OS will not make as much use of them as OSX will

So a Photoshop Plug in that calls the thread manager is fine, but you cannot run multiple copies of SETI @home and use both CPUs like you can in OSX.

Jimbo,

Thanks for all the help. Your answers gave me a lot to think about. We may have to go with the OSX and try our luck with classic mode. The reason we did not use classic mode before is the netware client would not work properly with it and our file server was NW 4.2. There is not a client that will work with NW4.2 and OSX. Since then we have upgraded the file server to NW6 and there is a client available that will do OSX and NW6. Have you ever used OSX with NetWare? Do use a client or the native file access? Has anyone tried Quark 4.1 using the classic mode.

Thanks for the help.

My understanding is that Quark 4.1 is not usable in Classic

Im still buying new G4's I just have the macs boot to Classic all the time and not OS X. Still using Quark 4.11, being a repro department and reseving files from all over the world, still find most people using Quark 4 not 5. In the last three months I have come accross 4 Quark 5 files out of a possable 4000.

If you can't fix it in 20 minutes call someone who can.

P20,

My understanding is the newest G4's cannot boot to classic mode anymore. We purchased a G4 back in November and it could boot to OS9 instead of X. I though that stopped in Jan. 2003. Am I wrong?

The operationing system has to be on the HDD, so why can you not boot from that OS? I might be wrong and be lucky enough to have go one of the last G4's that will do it. Go to the system Prefs (control panels) find the startup disk and have a look in there. As far as I know there should be two OS folders in there. Select the one you want. I have a Dual 1 Ghz doing it fine.

P20,

That is how we did it with the last mac we purchased (duel 900mhz) but I have been told that is not possible with the new systems. I cannot test since I have not purchased the new Macs yet. I was hoping someone had tried this. I could call Apple but if they tell me it is not supported that doesn't necessarily mean it wont work. So Quark 4.1 will not work when launched from OS X in classic window? Does anyone know if Quark 5 works?

Quark 5 should work, no problem and Quark 6 SHOULD work with OSx. ;)

Why not look at Quark 6? It should handle version 4 files in OSX. Can you wait to buy the new computers until Quark 6 is released?

Or... here's a new direction of thought... Don't buy a new Mac. Find a reseller of refurbished/overstock/used Macs to get a G4 that is not too old. You save money and keep your studio in the dark ages along with your customers ('dark ages' means anything more than 6 months old - - take no offense). Once you begin to see a flood of client work done on newer systems, you can invest in new Macs.

We run Quark 4 and 5 out of classic, with no major problems other than occasional weird printing glitches and of course the occasional crash and burn. I just got a brand new DP 1.4ghz machine, supposedly it will not boot into OS9. I haven't tried it yet, I will today. (Not that I'm looking forward to it, but now I'm curious!)
