Hello people,

I have a G3 Tower acting as a file server on a small office network that automatically backs each computer's data after closing every night. In it is an older DVD-RAM that uses the old-style slot cartidge DVDs where upon the data is copied onto. Here's the problem, there's so much data to be backed up that one DVD doesn't hold it all and the network back-up software (called Retrospect by Dantz) spits it out and asks for another. I put in another DVD-RAM that was previously used but want the old info erased. When I select "Erase Disk..." from the "Special" menu, I get a message that says, "The disk 1-Backup Set Test 1 could not be erased, because you cannot erase an shared disk." I'm running OS 9.1, how would I un-share the DVD-RAM if that's the solution?

Thanks,

Turn off AppleShare/file sharing while running backups to allow the disk to be removed.

I use an external 40 Gb USB 2.0 hard drive for backups. External USB 2 or Firewire drives can be obtained for about $200-$300 (USB 1 drives are too slow - - avoid them). You could fit your data on these without having to wait around to swap DVDs.
