When using the screensavers preference pane in OSX the system freezes. I've tried to reinstall everything from scratch but hte problem still excists. Is it possible that my PRAM got reset to an older firmware? I use a slotloading iMac G3 350 with 512 MB RAM (2001). I haven't encountered this before. If the firmware is the cause would it ne harmfull to do a firmware upd. and which should I take?

( all software mention is either apple preinstalled or can be found on such sites as versiontracker or macupdate)

1.its never a bad thing to update your firmware.

2. All of us using Mac OS X must get used to running maintenance routines

a) run fsck in single user mode (Cmd-S at prompt or safe mode start press shift at start or run disk first aid from start-up disk.

b) run permissions repair (use apple disk utility, or maintain or cocktail

c) run cron tasks (use maintain or macjanitor)

d) prebind files use System optimiser X 4.0 or maintain (I know apple say you don't have to prebind in 10.2...but it does help).

e)Clear internet and system cache.
