I'm writing a report of standardized testing data for the students enrolled in each teacher's classes. The report is grouped by:

Group #1 - school id#
Group #2 - teacher name/number (combined)
Group #3 - course number (Course 1141)
Group #4 - Course section number (Course 1141, Section 01, 02, etc)

The details section is made up of a subreport showing each student's scores, grouped by the student ID. The student ID is also the link field between the subreport and container report.

All of this to set up the problem: I have a page break in the footer for Group #4 (which means that every time a new class/section period starts, a new page starts). I also have the teacher name repeating on each page. The repeat of the teacher name is the problem.

When the page breaks to the new teacher, the previous teacher's header prints (with nothing else under it). I know I need some conditional suppression, but I don't know exactly what to evaluate since the detail is a subreport.

Thanks for any suggestions.

It sounds like you have some blank space within the subreport (the report footer?) or in the main report, e.g., group footers. Look to the left just below where the extra group header is printing to see what report section is creating this space. Try looking in design mode, and then suppress the blank sections and see if it resolves.

Another possibility is that you have set both new page before on the group header and new page after on the group footer--you only need one of these.

The subreport has everything suppressed but the header and details. No extra space there.

I checked, and I have force new page after on the footer of the teacher section, not on the header.

Very frustrating because it seems like it would be something simple!

Thanks for the suggestions. . .

And do you have blank, unsuppressed sections in the main report, e.g., GF sections? In design mode, also make sure the subreport is tight up against the horizontal section borders. Also format the detail section to "suppress blank section"--you might have cases where the sub is not executing, but the detail space is reserved.

Did you check what report section is displaying in the gray area to the left of the report canvas just below the orphaned group header? What was it?

The section to the left of the orphaned header is GH2.

It shows:
GH1
GH2 (the orphan header)
GH2 (the new section)
GH4 (I have GH3 overlaying GH4)
D

The detail section is tight against the sub report; all sections are set to suppress when blank. AARGH!

I actually meant to the left of the blank area. What do you mean by "the new GH2 section"? I thought you said you were getting ONLY blank space below the orphaned group header.

Try formatting all of the sections you mention in your last post to "suppress blank section."

Also, as an aside, it seems to me that you should be linking your sub on the student ID, AND the course ID, so that you don't end up showing grades for the wrong course.

First, on the linking question: that would be happening if this were "regular" grades, but this is state standardized test scores, which are referenced only by the student ID (don't get me started on that)!

Second, I went back and re-read my original post; I may not have been clear. There is no space after the orphan teacher header. The orphan header appears, then right below it the header for the change of course/section. Where the problem is happening is where the change of course/section happens at the same time the teacher changes.

Can you show a sample of what you mean, please? Are you suppressing any records? If so, what sections are suppressed and what are your criteria?

-LB

Page attached. . .

The following sections have blanks suppressed
GH2 (teacher)
GH3 (course)- this overlays GH4 (section)

The following are suppressed completely[\b]
GF5
GF4 - New page after
GF3
GF2
GF1

I'm going to have to use the report as-is. Unfortunately, with school starting in three days, there are too many requests and not enough time. Thank you for your suggestions.
