This may be a useful gadget.
Curious to know how long it will take to get things like this integrated with the flexible displays. Fold it up and put it in your pocket or organizer, then unfold/unroll it to be a full size touch pad, wireless PC

Sometimes just a few hours of trial and error debugging can save minutes of reading manuals.

Hmm... oversized pocket PC or undersized notebook?

If it doesn't pass the pocket test, it's not an everyday gadget for me. If I want to use a computer, I usually know in and advance that I need one, so I'll lug the laptop along. Why suffer with a cutdown display? If I need communication and minimal app processing, I'd better be able to drop the device in my shirt pocket.

I'm just waiting for the sub-US$400 price point.

I like the concept, but they've got to improve the battery life. Modern laptops get 2-3 hours today, and in a device like "Origami", I would expect 5 hours minimum (being able to go from lunchtime to end-of-day without needing a charge).

Really can't see where this item is going to be used. Well except the Sales Directors who "Must" have it. I don't know what it does, or how to use it, but I MUST have it!

I think I'd rather have a tablet PC. Full OS and there probably won't be much in the price difference.

Carlsberg don't run I.T departments, but if they did they'd probably be more fun.

Ten years ago, there were small-keypad devices, the Psion 3 and its successors.

The market has gone in two directions - neat and small devices, or bigger portables. Currently nothing in between.

That's not to say the Origami is the one, probably it's not. But there are more 'in the pipeline'.

Origami = shrunken tablet pc

Tablet PC was a flop, so shall Origami. Even the name itself spells doom.

Also take a look at the miserable sales with the Pocket PC. Microsoft is just not good with portables.

One upside though, the Origami will win over the iPod if it's used as an MP3 player.

>the miserable sales with the Pocket PC

Eh? Compared to what?

They're incredibly popular around here, not including the many TomTom/Ipaq deals being sold.

Regarding sales of Pocket PC/Palm units...around our company, we've completely stopped using them. It's all Blackberry's or Treo's. In my unscientific polling, most people I've spoken with consider them approaching obsolesence. In my personal opinion, they fail the pocket test--sure they're called "Pocket PC's", but what pocket? The huge cargo pants' pockets, maybe. Not a standard shirt pocket--especially with the cases.

I agree with philhedge in that if I need near-full computing power, I'll lug a laptop, otherwise, the device had better fit very nicely into a shirt pocket. I think the problem with pocket PC's is the form-factor--too big to truly be 'pocket-sized', and not enough power/useability to warrent lugging them along. But yes, there are a few uses where the tradeoffs of slightly larger size but slightly more fuctionality than a Blackberry gives them relevance.

That's just my opinion, I could be wrong

I'll tell ya, if I could get a pocket-sized device that connects with Sprint/Nextel network speed (or switches to WiFi when available), and has enough oomph to VNC, then I might be happy.
