Orange light on E&M board

I am connecting 2 Magix via MultiVoIP 810's. I didn't ground the two chassis, and when I connected the units the tie line board went orange as if in use and won't go off. We all decided I must have shorted the board - my bad.

I worked with very smart people to try and release the board - no go. I had another (two, actually) shipped, unhooked everything from the system connecting the tiealines and replaced the board - light went orange immediately after the board renumber was done. Did tests, all looks well, zero errors, d$#%m light won't go off. Tried another board, same thing.

I have reset it, busied and released it, tried a different slot, NOTHING works. What should I try next? I am on site today so any input would be appreciated (Jack - if you are reading this PLEASE call me...I would never bother you on a Sat.) I have removed the board, am doing a backup to my PC without it, and am going to frigid start and then restore the system from my PC and then try the board again. If that doesn't work, I guess I will replace the processor and backplane. If that doesn't work I guess I'm just gonna shoot myself....unless anyone has a better idea....

Do the system bond/ground like the Avaya documentation says...

....JIM....

I wasn't clear...the Magix was grounded, but the Multitech VoIP has a ground screw that needs to be grounded to the ground screw on the Magix. And, now that it is indeed grounded to the Magix, my tie line board lights won't go off; the frigid start didn't change anything.

Is it possible that the E&M trunk jacks are like the DID trunks, where they are expecting that the telco side be terminated on a jack, and a line cord that reverses polarity of the Tip and Ring be used from that jack to the Legend?

So, perhaps roll the polarity of the individual pairs on the connection between the MultiTech box and the Legend?

Don't know if this will help, but notice where you grd the 2 units together,

Models mvp200, 400, 800 use pin 7 for the ground connection to the Magix chassis ground screw.

Models mvp210, 410, 810 use the ground screw on the voip chassis to the Magix chassis ground screw.

There is another layout that is similar (resolution 3104) but states at the bottom 7 & 8 are not used, the grounding is done via the screws on both chassis.

The one above (resolution 401) that inserts the phrase 'signal battery' when referring to the brown ground wire.

By inference, then, the signal battery function was taken over by the ground screws instead of the brown pair.

So...can I assume that signal battery initiates the off-hook session, and somehow, by not grounding properly initially, I have created a permanent 'off-hook' session and that is why the orange light stays on?

Since that is all I have to work with, I am going to replace the processor and backplane, ground everything to a new ground bar that touches nothing else, and then try and connect the MV810 first via ground screws and then with the cables.

If anyone has actually done this, I would love to hear from them.

Touchtonetommy - you are correct in that polarity matters (which I was also told by MultiTech AFTER they told me it didn't matter.) The straight pairs MUST go in the VoIP unit and the crossed ones in the Magix. My whole frustruation at this point is my inability to release the orange light with NOTHING connected to it.

Did you try doing a LOOP AROUND between 2 of the Ports?

That would be my next step.

It's been quite a while since I worked on REAL TIE LINES that TTT may be onto something.

Doing the LOOP AROUND could prove it, and thus eliminate your frustration. (For this anyway.....)

I thought you said I couldn't loop around until the orange light went off? And it won't go off, even three boards and a frigid start later - yes I am having a long weekend. So I am on my way out with lots of ground wire, a new processor, and a new cabinet. That will make everything new except the 412 TDL and 016 T/R and I don't have spares of those or I would replace them too.

OK- so here is the latest. I replaced EVERYTHING, re-did the ground, started as if it were a new system and within 10 seconds had the orange light.

Because I couldn't think of anything else, I removed everything but the processor and then added the TDL and for kicks put the tie line board next to it - bingo - light went off and stayed off as soon as the 016 card was not installed...so I put it to the right of the tie line and so far so good except the tdl phones won't work so I am swapping backplanes back (processor change didn't help.) This is where patience is developed.....

End result. The 016 card and the processor were bad. I replaced them, and things are back to normal. Wow. Long day - thanks for the advice. At least everything is properly grounded.

I am not sure the answer to that. I kept swapping pieces to make the light go away, and I got the light to go away but the time on the system was ?G00 and wouldn't change until I changed the processor out. I think it all had something to do with whatever happened to the ground when I connected the Multitech and the Magix without grounding them...check your email - there's more there :)

WOW - if anyone ever wants to try this setup, post here and let me know. We finally got it working. The wiring diagram from MultiTech that says put the straight cable in the MVP810 and crossed end in the Magix is wrong; straight must be in Magix and cross in 810. Also...their standard E&M tie line programming has to be changed as well and auto call needs to be turned off in the 810...and the grounding must be done the way they say....and the default in the 810 E&M needs to be changed from Type II to Type I...about the only thing in their documents that was correct is the net coder settings.

So if you disbelieve all their documentation and make the above changes it works and the sound quality is excellent. I am sending my documentation to MultiTech and they will either post it as a resolution or write one of their own.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU to merlinman and dagwoodsystems for helping me figure this out. Now I can enjoy my Thanksgiving week....
