betaman,

Hi there, are you using the Oracle Business Suite Module for Legato? The savepnpc command has some rather limiting issues. It works okay, so long as "Everything" is perfect. There is no error checking with this command. All in all, if everything is setup correctly it should suffice just to run the savepnpc command to call your down / up scripts to backup your database, unless you have a 24/7 environment and can't afford to take the databases off-line. We currently back up about 300 GB worth of databases inside of 2 hours. We are backing it up over 100Mbps Full Duplex network, server contains a GigE card for load balancing, into a StorageTek 4970, TimberWolf.

Seems to work well so far.

Restores, depends on how you wish to perform the backup. If you multiplex, your saves will be fast, restores slower. Multiplexing spreads your save sets over a number of tapes as opposed to having one client on one tape. No multiplexing, longer to save, much quicker to restore.

We currently backup Oracle 8, 8i and 7 through Legato Networker using the savepnpc command. We are currently looking at "HOT" backup configs.

Take care,

CF
