I'm trying to connect Oracle 8i to a non-Oracle database through ODBC using generic connectivity. I've got the ODBC driver installed for the other DB, and now I'm stuck trying to get Oracle to see it. Documentation on this issue seems to be pretty slim. I've edited a file called inithsodbc.ora that is located in the /oraclehome/hs/admin directory, and I believe I've correctly modified the tnsnames.ora and listener.ora files, but I'm unsure of what the "agent executable" is that is referrenced in some of the documentation I've found.

Any help or additional information would be appreciated.

Which platform are you using Unix or NT? Have you tried reaching/testing your TNS entry for the database? Any errors? Did the listener service started?
T
he agent executable is found in the listener.ora file setting. For example:

sid_list_listener=
(sid_list=
(sid_desc=
(sid_name=hsmsql) <= Match the sid in tnsnames.ora.
(oracle_home=/u03/oracle/product/8.1.6) <= Appropriate $ORACLE_HOME
(program= hsodbc) <= Agent Executable
)
)
