Hello All:

I just downloaded Oracle 8i (8.1.7) from Oracle and installed it over version 8.1.5 (which used to work fine). I cannot start the database from the menu - it gives me the error message:

ORA-1589: Cannot open database.

This occurs at the very end, just as the database is about to start.

If I try to open it with SQL Plus, it gives two more messages in addition to the one above:

ORA-01034: ORACLE not available.
ORA-27101: Shared memory realm does not exist.

I am doing this with nothing else running on my PC using Windows 98.

What do I do now? Should I un-install and re-install?

TIA,

Codehead

I'll try to uninstall it with OUI and install it again. Make sure you should install in the same oracle home but different dir, e.g. oracle\ora81\...\8.1.7, not ...\8.1.5. Then upgrade to 8.1.7, I'll not upgrade unless have to, too many problems could occur. If you just play on the pc box, that's diff story.

When you upgraded the installation did you say yes to upgrading the database at the same time?
Try using the database migration assistant.
