Hi,

A few users have been complaining of system slowness, so I checked for space issues in the enterprise manager console, the thing is i'm pretty new to oracle admin, and i'm a bit confused as to what im seeing, for instance, if i look at the tablespaces the temp tablespace shows ar 99.97% used, but if i look at the actual datafile it shows as 0% used, which one is correct? apart from that there is free space in all tablespaces/datafiles.

Can someone explain to me what i'm seeing and why both views are different and also where i might check to find the cause of the system slowness ( if it is an oracle issue )

we are using oracle version 10G and running IFS as our ERP system.

Regards,

Mick.

ha, having to deal with IFS (assiming it's the same acronym) I doubt it is Oracle. We had to run rule based optimizer beacause their code (and application) is so poorly written (IMHO).

(I am assuming you are using enterprise edition of oracle and have licensed the appropriate accesory packs.)

You want to look at the top activity (top 5 wait events.) These are what will point you in the first direction to look.

Be careful with datafiles that are '0%' full. It very well could be that the file is in Veritas Fast I/O format, in which the actual file is a hidden file.

Thanks Dbtoo, i agree with your finding re IFS ( I'm not sure what version of oracle we have as we purchased it with IFS, they are meant to give us support on it but it rarely happens, so thought i'd try to look into it, I'll have a read through the links you posted and see if i can understand what i need to do.

Thanks again for your help.

Mick.

With regards to the users complaining: Ask specificially WHAT is slow. 'Everything' is typically the answer and is not acceptable.

IFS seems to want to charge you for every phone call! Whoever is getting the billing from them, needs to watch carefully. We had a situation where 1 project mangler would call and ask how things are going, then charge us an hour for his time. Makes me want to be a consultant!

(Santa, looking for any remote dba's? It's on my christmas wish list. Usually what I want comes in two stockings, but I'll take telecommuting full time instead.) ;}
