Hello all,

I have very many files of the type:

/export/home/oracle/core_8324/core

many of which date back to 1999. Am I safe in assuming that these can be deleted, retaining, say the last month or so's for reference. TIA.

These are unix core dumps, also known as stack dumps. They are generated whenever a serious error occurs involving the O/S. You can delete them anytime, but I would suggest you monitor recent/new ones... it can be a sign you have database problems.

Usually these are generated in the BDUMP or UDUMP directories along with .TRC trace files. Since this appears to be in Oracle's home directory, it was probably generated when someone (you, DBA?) has a process crash and burn when you were in that directory.

Many thanks Rich, I guessed they were unix core files. Most of them probably originate from the time we were developing the application when it wasn't quite as stable as it is now. However, it's nice to get confirmation of my own opinion. Thanks again.
