We're about to implement a project here that will have Oracle picking up an external text file via SQL Loader and importing it into a database. The text file will sit on an Active Directory server location. I'm being told that in order for Oracle to pick up the file, the server will have to be loaded with the 10g Client. Can someone confirm that this is necessary? Seems like a bit much just to pick up a small text file? I'd like to keep the overhead on this server to an absolute minimum because it is where the majority of our mission-critical production applications are being run from.

Is there no other way of connecting to or 'seeing' an active directory server from Oracle than installing a full-blown client directly onto the server??

Thanks in advance to anyone that can assist me.

Yes, if oracle db is on unix server, you could use ftp (or sftp) to copy the file from one to the other server -- or -- if both are WinDoze servers, mount the drive from one server to the other.
