Hello,

I am interested in starting an IT career, and am very interested in becoming an Oracle DBA. I have been an Oracle user for about 5 years but have no knowledge of database administration. I've read a number of comments, here and elsewhere, that say you must have some work experience as a DBA before taking the training classes.

Is it absolutely necessary to have work experience before taking training classes? If it is, how do you get work experience before you have any training?

Any advice on Oracle training or suggestions about where to start working on my career would be greatly appreciated.

I personally think you are at a very good point to take the DBA training. As always, there is a trade off - you will forget a lot of your training unless you have a chance to apply it on-the-job, but you will have trouble getting hired as an Oracle DBA without the proper training.

My own experience was that I took the Oracle DBA training with almost no Oracle experience at all. I was already a DBA in a DB2 environment, and we were adding Oracle applications. I feel that I benefitted from all the training, with the exception of the performance tuning workshop. It would have been much better to defer that course until I had some practical experience.

Karluk,

Thanks for the input.
