Oracle Cert

Currently, I am a team lead in mainframe operations. I'm trying to get out of this field. I would like to know if having an Oracle Cert could sneak me into being a jr DBA. My only experience concerning databases is light database programming using VB6 (ACCESS) and creating ad hoc reports utilizing SQL. What other certs would I have to get in order to get become a jr dba?

You could also look at Microsoft's DBA certification (MCDBA). It involves 4 exams (3 required, and one elective). There may also be a certification exam for IBM's DB2 as well, but I am not really that familiar with DB2 though. Getting at least an Oracle Certified Associate OCA (Oracle's version of MCP), or the Oracle Certified Professional OCP, could help you get into the door. However, do not rely solely on certification. The more experience you have, the better. With some type of experience, an OCA or an MCP could definitely help get you in the front door. I hope this helps.

Thank you for your help...but how in the world do I get experience? I work in a mainframe environment where I'm basically concentrating on MVS. Thx

I could be wrong about this but it is working into. Oracle and MS have home or personal versions. You could get those and some books and set something up at home. Not quite the experience you are looking for but anything is better than nothing and it show enthusiasm. AJ

The oracle cert would certainly help you move into database work, or just proving to the company that you are working with databases and studying to become Oracle certified. I don't know much about their tests but I belive they are rather dificult to pass. There is an Oracle forum here that would be far more able to assist you then us MCSER's.
