Anyone has good backup suggestions on Oracle using Networker. RMAN seems to be un-reliable, the synchronisation of recovery catalog is the key factor to the success of db recovery. And i have experienced a un-synchronised catalog being not able to recover the db. This has resulted a phobia using RMAN. Anyone has better suggestions?

Someone suggested to bring the related db file in backup mode, then do a normal flat file backup. When backup finishes bring the file online again. During the backup period all updates will be into the archive log, when the files are brought online it will be roll forward using the archive log. In this method, no Oracle backup module will be required and backup can also be done "HOT". Any comments?

Well RMAN is Ok if all componients are backuped up.
if a full cold backup is taken, (db shutdown then restarted in mount mode you have all of the dbf, arch,(if arch is turned on), and control files. If you have at lease 8 week retintion on tapes between colds you are Ok. take onlines between that, and you won't loose anythin. My problem with legato is the new nsrnmo script which doesn't let you specify oracle sid and oracle nome. pain..
