Due to budget limitations, we are unable to purchase the Oracle agent. Is it possible to use rman to write directly to tape using NetBackup without the agent. How would the media/images be tracked if the agent isn't involved? Is anyone doing this???

You must use the agent. This is how RMAN will communicate with NetBackup.

Have one server install NetBackup with Oracle Agent recently.
But just got some information that there is an separate Oracle agent which do not required RMAN script - which agent is it? I really like to look into it. Very uncomfortable about the RMAN, not event sure if when came to restore, the script will work or not.

The rman backup is quite tricky especially when backing up large amounts of data.(5 terabytes) Its much easier to just shutdown the database and perform a filesystem backup. That way if there is an error of some sort, 84,85... you dont have to re-run the entire backup, just the failed fiesystem. When RMAN backups recieve any type of error the backup has to be restared completely!

What a comfort feeling - DisgrntldVeritasUser. We can no loger affort to shut it down, so we get the solution in. Guess We will have to go back to our vendor and get them to do a POC for the production server restore.
