I downloaded Oracle 9i Enterprise.

I would like to access the database which I call root - it queries me for login and password.

I distinctively do not remember entering login or password info during installation.

If 9i is like previous Oracle versions, there will be users "sys" and "system" with default passwords "change_on_install" and "manager" respectively.

Naturally you should change these passwords after first logging on. Leaving them as defaults is a huge security risk. The syntax to change passwords is

alter user sys identified by new_password;
