Oracle 9i client accessing 8i server

I am running 8i server (817 patch up) on a win2k server. My users, most of them, access this server with 8i clients via a win2k terminal server.

I have to add a new terminal server and it will be running win2k3. Since 8i will not run on win2k server, I would like to install the 9i client to access the 8i server.

Is this possible? Can the 9i clients interact with the 8i server until I can get the 8i server upgraded?

I eventually want to get to 10 in the next 6 months.

Thanks

knack,

Normally oracle provides backwards compatibility.
However, in your post you say that you intend to go to 10g.

Why not cut out the intermediate 9i step and just go straight to 10? Aren't you doing unnecessary work here?

I guess I should have worded it a bit different, but yes, I can go to the latest release. The only problem is, it will be 6+ months before the server gets upgraded.

I too am in just such a position. As part of upgrading to 10g, we have users with clean installed 10g sql plus, OLE DB drivers etc, talking to 9i databases.

It works, and it also means that when we do upgrade the server, if a rollback is needed, we don't have to touch the clients - they can just stay at 10g.

I think avoiding the intermediate step is almost essential, as if you search fora regarding upgrades, everyone says a clean installation is much better. Putting 9i in, then ripping it out, then installing 10g seems needlessly risky.
