From memory (the last time i attempted which was prob about 2 years ago) I had all sorts of probs with oracle (using 8 client) as Cognos (FM and reporting studios) were generating case statements which wouldnt run on the database.
There are a few options for you
* connect through CIS (Composite Information Server) - this is a free product supplied by Cognos for connecting to all sorts of non-standard data sources (access, excel etc) and some dinosaurs like oracle 8
* use a DB link into a later version of Oracle and connect using the later versions oracle client
* If you can get away with a data lag, copy your tables over to a newer version of oracle overnight?
* I've also heard about a MSSQL server process which creates a linked DB to the oracle one and you query through stored procs, but it sounded like too much hard work and too much maintenance.
