I am signed up to take the Oracle 8i DBA track at a local college. Once completed and all tests are passed (hopefully), what are my chances of getting some sort of Junior DBA position? I understand that nothing is set in stone, especially in this tough job market. Currently, I am in the IT field. I have 2 yrs with databases (SQL Server) writing stored procedures and using Crystal Reports. I have also had a 6 month contract position as an Assistant DBA for SQL Server and I have a dgree in Mathematics. After losing my contract position recently, I have decided to take this opportunity to go get certified in something, in the hopes that this kind of thing does not happen again. Or, if it does again, I will have the skills to land a job more quickly. Any thoughts would be helpful.

Also, which classes do you advise me to take to supplement this certification. I was thinking Java.

Tim:

I don't mean to dicourage you but I am an Oracle Certified DBA with programming, PL/SQL and DBA experience, and I am looking for a job for eight months now with no results. The current market needs expertise and precise experience for specific periods of time for many disciplines. (To my knowledge no one requires certificates.) If you match their requirements 100% you have just about 1% chance for an interview; you and 20-30 others. Things are rough. My best advice to you (and to myself) is to network through friends. Call everyone you know. Incidentally, I have a Ph.D. in Mathematics.

Wow, that's a reality check!! Might I ask how you are surviving during this downturn and also, what part of the country are you in? Thanks for your reply.
