I am very new to Oracle. Can someone please assist with instructions for installing Oracle 8.0.4 PE on Windows 2000 Professional? TIA

hmmmmm
Your question implies that your knowledge about Oracle is almost non existent. Which leads me to the conclusion that you have to know more before you can use Oracle database.

The first try is to find the setup.exe on your download/CD. This will start the installtion proces. If you dont know anything about Oracle you should create a starter database anmd default network setup too. There is tools to remove it again when you are more experienced.

BTW 8.0.4 is not that good on NT/2000. 8.0 is a pain with intermedia. get hold of 8.1.7.x its stable and good. If you want to try new stuff : 9i is ready for download at technet.oracle.com

Thanks Steenbdk,
Your comments are _almost_ true. I am not Oracle literate. My question, and I should have been more explicit, relates to the fact I get errors when I try to run 8.0.4PE install process on Win2k. An associate more Oracle literate said that 8.0.4 will not install on Win2k _at all_. However, someone eles (also more Oracle wise) said it is possible. I was looking for pointers from the forum members as to:
1: Is it possible to load 8.0.4PE on Win2k?
2: If yes, is there anything tricky I need to know/do?

TIA,
gymsa
PS: Have personal reasons (licensing being one) for wanting to load 8.0.4 - have download of 8.1.7 but would like to use the fully licensed copy if possible...

You can not use fully licensed version because Oracle 8.0.4 is not certified on W2K.
Although you may install and even run it successfully, you can not get any support for such combination and thus it's not suitable for production database. If you plan to use it for developers needs, do feel free to install downloaded release, of course after reading and accepting license agreement.
You may set compatible to 8.0.4 to limit functionality but preserve compatibility.

Thanks sem, I am a bit confused. Are you saying I CAN install 8.0.4PE if it is downloaded but CAN NOT if I attempt installation from a legitimate Oracle CD?
FYI, when attempting an install of 8.0.4PE on W2K I receive the following ERROR INFORMATION:
"stopsrvc.vrf(78): Type mismatch in argument '0' when calling 'contains'
stopsrvc.vrf(78): 'STRING' expected when 'LIST' found"

For reasons I will not bore you with I would like to get this version loaded if possible. Any ideas? If there is some difference between downloaded and purchased code that will allow installation (strange but whatever) I have been unable to locate a site to download v8.0.4. Again, any ideas?
TIA

I'm saying that you CAN INSTALL 8.1.7 and set compatible to 8.0.4 to imitate 8.0.4 behavior.
As far as I know if you try to install unsupported version of product on clean (not affected by previous versions of product) machine and get errors, your chances to install it are very small and you have to choose some supported combination.
