I've setup a database that some folks (non-tech) want to run ADHOC queries against. They were wanting to use ,pardon me "ACCESS" ODBC from there desktops and query generator to query these tables. One of the tables is 1.5K wide 4.5 million rows the other is 3k wide and 33 million rows. Trying to link the larger table is taking forever. Is there a better (faster) tool that someone that doesn't know what they want can use to query a remote database?

There are a variety of tools. in our organization favourites are PL/SQL Developer and SQL Navigator. Both have a relatively simple to use GUI, but require a license fee. SQL Developer is also available free from Oracle, but its rather flaky to say the least.

IMO I would not give non-technical people access to PL/SQL developer or SQL Navigator.

Oracle makes a tool called Discoverer which is for exactly this purpose....it provides end user query-ability with some level of comfort that the end user will not build a query that can impact performance or provide invalid data. It's an excellent tool...but it isn't free.

But back to original complaint....performance. When you sai remote database....what do you mean? Is this database across the WAN from the end user? If so, what is the bandwidth of the connection? This may be your problem and you may consider using terminal services or Citrix to allow the user to execute the queries on the backbone -- in line with the DB.

Does that make sense?
