Hi,

I installed oracle 10g release 2 on a solaris machine, there were some 9i databases already exist on this server, when I installed the 10g, I didn't shutdown anything about 9i, I just installed the 10g into a separated oracle home. after the 10g install, I can't connect to the 10g database, what elase should I do to adjust this issue?

Thanks!

Maswien,

You experience with the Oracle 9i LISTENER not properly handling connections to an Oracle 10g instance matches my experience. If have found that I needed to invoke an Oracle 10g LISTENER to create connections for Oracle 10g but the nice side benefit is that the 10g LISTENER can also make appropriate connections for Oracle 9i (and Oracle 8) instances. (The scenario is the same for earlier versions: an Oracle 9i LISTENER can create connections for previous Oracle versions, as well.)

This resolution requires your shutting down the Oracle 9 LISTENER, then starting up the Oracle 10g LISTENER (and having the 10g LISTENER become the default LISTENER that starts up whenever the machine restarts).

I'll explain how to effect the above in your companion thread to this thread (Create a listener thread1177-1247101).
