Hello,

When installing oracle client I always have the ORACLE_BASE set to /home/oracle so when it does the install the Inventory directory is always under /home/oracle/oraInventory.

But if I install multiple oracle clients on this server this directory will get overwritten with the details of the new oracle client install. Does this matter?

Cheers

Nick

It can do, and the recommendation we have always adhered to is to rename the existing oraInventory (with a date extension or something) before starting the new install. Probably unnecessary, but belt and braces I guess.

The internet - allowing those who don't know what they're talking about to have their say.

A single Oracle inventory can, and routinely does, keep track of multiple Oracle homes. Just give the homes different names, say ORA_CLIENT_1, ORA_CLIENT_2, etc. and you will be able to install as many clients as you want on the server - all of them controlled by the same central inventory.

I would even go so far as to say it's generally poor strategy to try to have separate inventories for the different clients. It can be done, but you have to remember to call the Oracle installer with different inventory pointer locations for each install - and that can be messy and error-prone. Unless you have a compelling reason to do otherwise, just stick with a single inventory.
