ORA-12545 on solaris with Oracle 8.1.7

I have an oracle database installed on an NT box and I have installed the oracle client on solaris. Everytime I attampt to connect to the database I get the following error:
ORA-12545: Connection Failed becaues target host or object does not exist.

I have tried everything. Can anyone out there help me.

Have you configured your tnsnames.ora correctly at your client side? Can your client ping your server? Is the listener on your server up?
