ORA-12162 ERROR

Hi,
I am trying to install oracle 10.2 on redhat linux. I am getting the following error:
ORA-12162 TNS:net service name incorrectly specified
I used dbaca to install the database with character set US7AS11(none of the other worked).
Although the database is up i was not able to connect to oracle using sqlplus "/ as sysdba" and getting the above error.
My NLS_LANG parameter is set as US7ASC11.

I am little puzzeled why I am getting this error. Listener is up and running. Tnsping woks.
Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Could you please post the contents of your tnsnames.ora and sqlnet.ora files, and protocol.ora (if one exists) (that typically reside in $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin)?
