Hi,
I would like to know when this error can occur-

ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve service name

Can there be a problem with the SQL Net Alias not created properly or with the TNSNAMES.ORA file?If someone can explain this in detail I would be glad.

Thanks
Rohan

This error means that the alias couldn't be found. Thus either tnsnames was incorrect/missing or connect string was not entered properly Regards, Dima

Hi It can be due to lot of errors like wrong configuration of listener.ora or the listener process itself is not started.

check these and give more info while u are trying to login and also send me the details of the listener.ora and tnsnames.ora ( I mean not the entire file but the sections as using in the connect string )

best regards
Prem.

Check sqlnet.ora too. If NAMES.DEFAULT_DOMAIN is set (this seems to appear by magic), then this value can be appended to the connect string without you seeing it (until you "trace" it). This accounts for most of my grey hair! DaPi - no silver bullet

You might also check your client machine. A lot of times, people have more than one tnsnames.ora file on their machine and don't know it. Consequently, if you set up one tnsnames.ora file to reference your target database but your client application uses a different file for connection information, you will get this error.
