I currently have a modem plugged into the J16 port on the backplane of a Option 61 system. I cannot get the modems to talk to each other. I get the data tone coming across that they are seeing each other but the modem connected to the switch will not pick up and allow data to transfer. There is a terminal connected to the switch but I currently have no remote access to the switch. Any suggestions?

You may have to attach a nul-modem adapter either between the cable and the J-16 port, or between the cable and modem.
A nul-modem adapter looks just like a gender changer and should be available at most computer stores or Radio Shack.
