I have a R12 Meridian Mail system with a 2GB drive on an Option 11C switch that's dying (Hard drive whining, and reporting errors). I'm unable to even do a backup. What are my options? It's still working, but I'm afraid disaster is iminent. Can the drive be imaged with something like Acronis?
All suggestions are welcome!

Print all users and menus and basically every menu option. Replace drive and re-key system.

If you have a PASS contract with AVAYA on MerMail - there is a tool to move bad HD cells to a good cells - if you can have that done you might be able to get a backup.

First - find a good 2.1 GB SCSI drive. Same make and model if possible. Keep the little jumpers on the hard drive in mind when swapping and set them identical to the one you're replacing. The drives are out there (not cheap either). Shut down MerMail and replace the drive.

Don't forget to disable AML 9 in LD 48 and enable after you bring MerMail back up.

You'll need an older external SLR tape drive that can read/write QIC-150 cartridges (250 MB tapes). If you don't have one - call your vendor, we usually have these floating around to keep these old MM systems alive.

If you have a fairly recent and good backup, it's a matter of installing MM 12 from tape (you have the install tape right?) and restoring from backup. Then making any changes to the mailboxes as needed since the last good backup. Hopefully you're backing up more than once a year unlike some customers of mine.

Odds are passwords and greetings will be the same for people who haven't made any such changes since before the last good backup was made. But be prepared to reset a bunch of passwords and give folks a quick cheat-sheet on how to change greetings and the such. Also any voice services (i.e., auto attendants, TOD controllers, etc...) will need to be tended to - especially if there have been changes since then as well.

Voice mails since the last backup and before the crash will all be lost. Hopefully you have limits on mailboxes to prevent people from saving years worth of voice mails they absolutely "need".

MM 12 has been end-of-life for years... give some very serious thought into upgrading, especially if you're using an auto attendant on your main number.

Good luck!
