Hello,

I have a rather perplexing Meridian 1 COT trunk issue that has been driving me crazy.

My system is a small 4 slot setup with the following components:
Slot 0: NTDK20 SSC
Slot 1: NT8D14 Universal Trunk Card
Slot 2: ---
Slot 3: ---
Slot 4: NT8D02 16 port DLC

I have 3 COT trunks on the NT8D14 configured with the basic settings and all 3 trunks are members of rout 10, which has an access
code of 3810, and ATDN of 3201 (see full config lower in the post). The 3 COT trunks are connected upstream to an FXS gateway (vg224) that provides dialtone.
I have confirmed the individual ports from the FXS gateway provide dial tone and can send/receive calls with 2-way audio.

Here's where things get interesting: Inbound calls from the FXS ports to the Meridian COT trunks work flawlessly,
the call goes into the trunk and rings the ATDN, the corresponding phone rings, and when I pick up I have 2 way audio.
When calling out however, things are a bit different... As a prelim test I've just been using the 3810 ACOD to access
the trunk, the ACOD works and when I access the trunk I can hear some faint static, but no dial tone!

I know for a fact the ACOD works as the TARG/TGAR values on the phone/route are dissimilar and have no issues dialing the ACOD
itself. Why is there no dial tone? I've tried changing several settings but can't think of what specifically could be causing
this outside of a bad card. (On a side note I had another nt8d14 card I was testing that was not receiving ANY inbound audio with the
same config, but the current card has no issues with this).

In many ways this issue is similar to these posts, both without a clear resolution:

I have confirmed I have the correct pairs punched down for the NT8D14 (skipping pairs since the even ones are 900 ohm)
I have also done an init, and have reseated the card as well with no change.
I have also tried a different slot with no change.

Any and all help is of course appreciated, please see my configs below:

The dialtone for outgoing calls would come from the fxs gateway. You should be able to go on the trunk toward the fxs with a test phone and get dialtone. Or just try dialing something even if you don't get dialtone. Could be a configuration issue on the external equipment.
No reason to suspect the option 11 especially since you are receiving calls and have voice.

Thanks for the quick reply StanleySteamer.

You’re on the money as far as the gateway is concerned — when I plug a test set in to FXS gateway (in to the specific ports normally connected to the COT trunks) I can get a dial tone and can dial and receive calls with no problem.

I tried dialing digits thru the M2616 after the ACOD (despite having no dial tone) but nothing happens and no call is made. I do here a brief pause in the static while the DTMF tones are being sent (presumably since I have EEST NO in FTR_DATA)

I’ll have to check my VG224 ports to see if there’s anything suspicious there. Oddly I do have several other analog phones hanging off the VG with no dial tone issues.

I figured it out :)

For anyone else that runs into the same thing here is how I figured it out. 2 parts to note:

1. Knowing that inbound calls to the COT trunks from the FXS ports do work, I placed a call in to my COT trunk and answered it with my test M2616. After answering the call and confirming 2-way audio, I hung up the calling phone (an analog phone connected to another port on the VG 224 gateway) but kept the M2616 off-hook. At this point what happened is the line got cycled and the meridian phone now had a dial tone again (with the ACOD for the COT trunk still displayed) -- at this point I dialed an extension that is directly on the VG 224 and IT WORKED!!! ..... this in turn led me to item 2....

2. I am dumb and didn't realize that it looks like inbound calls and outbound calls utilize the route LINear search in reverse (ie when I'm dialing an ACOD for a route it looks like it starts with the highest RTMB, so in my case it started with RTMB 10 3 , instead of RTMB 10 1 which is what I expected). I did a stat during the outbound call to the ACOD and noted that my 3rd unit on the analog trunk card was BUSY instead of the first one as I had expected. Then I went back, looked at my gateway and realized the 3rd port was not plugged in (as I said before, I haz the dumb).

Either way, appreciate all the help here. Helps a lot to get a fresh set of eyes on a problem :)

Cheers,
bc
