I am a new DBA and the IT guy came to me saying I need to optimize my Database before he is able to run an upgrade to a software package that uses my database.

When he says I need to “optimize the database” does he mean I need to run: Database backups, rebuild indexes, shrink the databases and check that there is optimal space to handle the upgrade? Or is there a specific optimize process I need to follow in order to get my database ready for a software upgrade?

I am using SQL 2005.

I believe your "IT guy" needs to be more specific.

Ask him what he means when he refers to "optimization".

Is this just his opinion/statement or are the needed "optimizatiopns" listed in his upgrade doc.

If his upgrade doc does mention it, then get a copy and read it too to make sure you are covering all of the bases.

Thanks

As Kusch points out, optimization can mean so many different things. When I hear "optimize the db" I think of normalization, index design, query design, etc. Sounds like your IT guy wants to pin you down and cover his butt. Do as Kusch suggests and ask a simple question, "Optimize the db in what regard?"

-If it ain't broke, break it and make it better.
