Optimize Goldmine over VPN?

I'm hosting Goldmine at a 1and1.com managed server. I have set up users with VPN's and mapped drives to the Goldmine share. To run Goldmine they double-click a shortcut on their desks that points at the GMW7.EXE executable on the server. I have not installed Goldmine on the local workstations.

It takes 5-6 minutes to get the Goldmine splash page, and it has to transfer more than 30mb over the VPN before the splash page arrives. Once logged in, performance is pretty sluggish.

I expected the performance to be bad, but I don't want to write off this solution without bringing some other opinions/experience to bear. Is there anything I'm missing that would increase performance? Does installing Goldmine locally really help? Would it avoid that 30mb download? And what's the easiest way to configure a local client to only use the remote Goldmine server if I don't want to have to mess with online/offline syncing?

Thanks for any advice.

Move all EXE, DLLs, Help files and the TX32 directory locally. Make sure you move the BDE local as well.

Richard, how is that different from a local install? Would a local install do the same thing, or is there a specific procedure for moving the files you mentioned?

Would they all go in a single local directory? Should the dlls be registered locally?

And BDE installed, right?
