I'm writing a report and have hit writers block. The report deals with a replacement fro the Unix passwd routine which runs from a command line and therefore can be used in batch mode. I'm trying to tidy the sentence
A routine which non-interactively sets a password for a user
I can't let that stand. Automatically, one of the altenatives, sounds like there's no user input whatsoever which is not true.

Any ideas?
Thanks

Ummmmm....... passively?

Or just use "A routine which sets a password for a user through batch mode.".

Extractively? Nope, doesn't sound right at all!

Thanks Susan. That's just what I wanted/

Good call Susan. Just dropping out the word gave the sentence the right tone.

In no particular order, some additional possibilities:

"A routine which, as prescribed, sets a password for a user"
"A routine which subsequently sets a password for a user"
"A routine which ultimately sets a password for a user"
"A routine which silently sets a password for a user"

Good Luck

interactive" is one of those words for which there really doesn't seem to be an exact "opposite". Depending on what you mean by it, "opposites" could be:

automatic
inert
non-interactive (most accurate, but cumbersome)

I suspect in most cases "automatic" would be useful, as implies that work is being done without user interaction.
