We have an IP office 500 system here, we currently all have 5410 phones and we have a few 5420 phones in the box still. We have one sales guy who wants to have a phone in his home office and have it appear as if he is in the building (transfer calls, ring on the hunt group, etc) From what I understand (which I admit isn't all that much) I need to create a VPN Tunnel. One issue is when he went to try to get a static IP address his service provider said that it would force him to get a "business" account and an extra $200 a month...

What other options do we have?

You should be able to set his VPN up with a dynamic IP and have to connect to the office or you can set the phone as a VPN endpoint and then have the phone create the VPN tunnel.

He doesn't need a static IP address. If you install VPN software on one of the 5420 phones that you have in a box then he will just be a VPN client off your network. Setup a VPN server vs a VPN site to site.

if you install VPN firmware on a 5420 you are a Genius
the 54XX series handsets are TDM phones!

you require 56XX handsets with VPN firmware or 96XX handsets (Software level Depending)

You will also require a VCM in the IPO & a free IP Endpoint Licence
Your VPN solution at H.O. must be one supported by Avaya.

Alternatively you could use the mobility features & twin an office phone to his land line/mobile but this would incur call charges.

Also - speak to a good business partner about these things, as they can sell you the correct hardware and licences and give you proper advice.

ok, Im a little confused.... What would be the easiest and cheapest solution. Is there a walk through or guide somewhere that will explain some of this?

yeah I think our problem is we got the IP office system for a great price, and we asked "will it do this, and this and this" and they of course said yes, and when we started trying to do it they added "but you need to buy an additional license to do that" WTF?!?!? When we said we want it to do these things why didnt you put that into the quote (like Twinning).

Most of it I have a work around like instead of true twinning I use forward to numbers.... its not the best but we dont have the money to invest in updating the system already.

This is how our control unit looks under management

Well you have a VCM already, and you are release 5 so you don't need an avaya endpoint license, so you just need a 5610 or 5621 IP phone, and load the Avaya VPN firmware on that and configure it for your office VPN device. (i.e. Do you have a VPN capable router at the office?) See the Avaya knowledgebase for tek-tips on specific router models.

You don't need an Avaya IP end point license, but you do need a VPN license. The part number is 213980. On R6 and R7 there isn't a VPN license, but you need one on R5 software.

We have a Cisco ASA5505 which I believe does VPN, Ill have to check with Avaya.

R5 R6 and R7 whats the difference? can I upgrade my software?

rdoubrava is correct. R5 you need a vpn license for the VPN firmware phone. R6+ does away with the VPN license but then you need an Avaya IP endpoint license for any Avaya IP phone.

If you could get the site to site VPN working, then you won't need any licenses.

Yes you can upgrade your software/hardware, but it requires... guess what... A LICENSE! :) Talk to a BP about all the goodies in R6 R7 and R8. (If you're really going to take the time to update and pay for a license plus some labor from a good BP, then you might as well get on R8) :)

The VCM32 will give you 12 IP endpoint licences to replace the 4 channels ( & 3 endpoints for any VCM channel licences you have)

The V7.0 upgrade licence is not hugely expensive so it may be your best option especially as the 56XX handsets are end of life & 96XX are not supported on V5.0

Ok, so figuring we have 1 user now, but in the future we may get up to say 4 that are remote users. What would be the easiest, and preferably least expensive way to do this given that a static ip and point to point VPN may not be an option.

I dont know what options V7 has, it may solve a pesky issue with ours now that the hunt groups keep disappearing.

IPGuru, does that mean that I already have some licenses since I have the VCM32?

Yes when Avaya changed from licensing channels to endpoints 1 channel = 3 endpoints

if you have a vcm32 without any licenses then on a V5 or earlier system you have 4 active VCM channels
v6.0 onwards these become 12 IP endpoints

A Maintenance contract is essential, not a Luxury.
Do things on the cheap & it will cost you dear

Ill try taking it off DHCP and seeing if that fixes it. It seems to happen when I change something, and save it next thing i know people are saying the huntgroups are not working, I log back in and sure enough errors says cant find huntgroup... 'xxx' from what I specified on the auto attendant, and huntgroups shows (0) and I have to import them from my saved list.

IPGuru, so I have a VCM32, does that mean that I can use 4 IP phones and already have the licenses built into that card?? Im sorry, I'm not very up to speed with this stuff. Phone systems are not something I deal with a lot.

Now: vcm32 with 4 channels active when you have no additional vcm channel licenses.

After upgrade: vcm32 with 32 channels and 12 IP end point licenses.

The vcm channel licenses are replaced by IP end point licenses.
For migration Avaya gives 3 IP end point licenses per vcm channel.

I am still not sure that I really get it.... So If I upgrade to V 7 or 8 or whatever I will have a few licenses to use IP phone for remote users. Will I need any other licenses, software or hardware (besides obviously the phone).

Whats the cost for the upgrade?

You will need a BP involved to get the licences anyway, I suggest you also get them to advise then configure this for you, you can quickly get in over your head :)
