Andy,
You know I edit the registry ALOT. But I've never gone for those so-called speed tips using the registry. There are just too many configurations of computers that one setting will not give an improvement on all computers.
Keep an eye on your temporary internet files. I run a cable modem and have set mine to a total of 10MB. Works fine for me, pages pop up instantly even when my resources are way down. Make sure there are only 4 folders under the C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files\Content.ie5 directory. After you click the Delete Files button in IE, open Windows Explorer and check it out manually. Right-click on the 4 cryptic-named folders and verify there is only one file. You won't see it, it's the totally hidden index.dat file.
In Tools>Internet Options, click the Settings button, then the View Objects button. If any ActiveX Controls show a status of damaged, hightlight it and click the Remove button. Or simply remove the ones you no longer use.
Then Backup the registry and/or export the following keys:
go to Start>Run, type regedit. Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Code Store Database\Distribution Units
and delete any keys here that contain any information to the Controls you removed.
I'd also suggest you visit Windows Update and download the Critical Update Package for your machine. Do not download the Critical Update Notification or the error reporting Tool.
