Opinion Pole On Multiple EXE's Appearing As Open On Novell Network

Hello,

We've received several inquiries from the Network Administrator about the occasional user showing more than one copy of an EXE or the VFP6r.dll open at the same time. These EXE's are launched in one of two methods.

(Too much time on her hands I guess.)

#1) Most Projects are called using an Check4Update.EXE which checks the user's RealProject.EXE release date against the server's RealProJect.EXE release date. If the server's copy is newer, then the server version of the RealProject.EXE is copied down to the user's machine and then launched from the Check4Update.EXE. If they were the same, then the Check4Update.EXE launches the RealProject.EXE.

#2) One is where the OtherProject.EXE is launched by the user right from the server. This copy is used by everyone.

Sometimes, the Check4Update.EXE, RealProject.EXE, OtherProject.EXE and even the VFP6r.dll appears to the network administrator as being opened twice on the user's workstation. When we check the user's machine we have found that sometimes there are two versions running at the same time .... BUT IN MOST CASES, there is only ONE COPY showing up on the user's machine.

OPINION POLE:

1) Why would Novell "occasionally" show two copies of these EXE's or two copies of the VFP6r.DLL as open on the user's machine when there is only one actually running - and ...

2) Is this of any "real" concern to network administration?

Thank you for your time (and patience),

Dave
