Operating System

Well, I've got a fun little problem. I have to write an "Operating System" for the latest class I'm taking. They've given us no information and we're expected to research and do this all by ourselves (I know, why pay money to do something you could do just the same for free?) but nonetheless, I have to do it. I don't have the slightest clue on where to even start. Does anybody have any experience with this kind of thing, or have seen any websites, articles, etc... I need information.
