Hi, I am noob and just downloaded and installed solaris 10. I now want to use Opera instead of firefox so I went ahead and downloaded Opera. I then unpackaged the file and was left with opera-9.64.gcc295-static-qt3.pkg on my desktop. When I try and double click it I am shown the error 'There is no action associated with "opera-9.64.gcc295-static-qt3.pkg" You can configure GNOME to associate applications with file types. Do you want to associate an application with this file type now?'

Can somebody please tell me how to install this browser I did not think it would be this difficult.

Many thanks.

Hi - take a look at the man pages for pkgadd

Some days are diamonds, some days are rocks - make sure most are the former.

You should just be able to type man pkgadd and read the resulting information.

Basically, put you file in a convenient directory, cd to the directory and use:

pkgadd -d . <package name>

HTH.

Some days are diamonds, some days are rocks - make sure most are the former.

I placed the opera.pkg file in the filesystem folder
then clicked -Launch - Application - Utilities - Terminal and then typed in the following;

# pkgadd -d./opera.pkg

I was then shown the following information in the consol window

The following packages are available:
1 opera opera
(sparc) 9.64

Select package(s) you wish to process (or 'all' to process
all packages). (default: all) [?,??,q]:

so I typed 'all'

and I was then shown

Processing package instance <opera> from </opera.pkg>

opera(sparc) 9.64
#

Can you please tell me the next step as I can not see opera icon anywhere to start it.

Many Thanks

Sorry, I don't use a GUI - perhaps someone else can help?

Some days are diamonds, some days are rocks - make sure most are the former.

Try grep bin/opera /var/sadm/install/contents to see where it was installed to (remove the bin/ if that finds nothing). Then you can run it from the command line using /path/to/bin/opera &. You should be able to create and icon using that path too (I'm not a Solaris GUI user either).

It seems like the Opera folks could have given some better info about how to install and run it... I guess they assume prior knowledge if you're going to run it under Solaris as their Get Started help page only talks about Windows.

There is a "knowledge" base article on the subject, here, however unfortunately it doesn't contain a lot of knowledge, describes a different type of install format (tarball), and doesn't describe how to run it. So not much help really!
