We have a member who doesn't seems to be able to log into Tek-Tips using the Opera 3.51 browser.

We use a protection scheme, which, in part, checks the last page the browser was in, and if it was in Tek-Tips checks for the password entered and the username, along with other paramters.

I'm thinking that this member's browser is not passing the last page with the http request, which is causing the site to throw her back to the login page.

Is anyone else here using the Opera browser? I downloaded it and logged into the site successfully, so I'm not sure what to tell her as to what the problem is and how to fix it.

If anyone has any clue how to set the Opera browser so it passes these parameters, or any other settings that would help her, I would appreciate it if you would post some suggestions here so I can pass them along.

She might try enabling cookie logging or referer logging in the advanced menu of the preferences dialog.

Or if that does not work, she can throw away the preferences . The Opera browser seems to work fine on Its defualt settings.

Opera is actualy a good browser to test pages with because it is so unforgiving. If a page passes the test with Opera, then it is likely to be cross browser compatible, but not to say cross system cmpatible because it only runs on windows. For the Mac there is a similar browser which has flourished ever since it hit the market about a year ago, it is a German browser known as iCab. The only problem with this browser is that it does not support JavaScript yet, but it supports CSS really well; so I guess there's a toos up between browsers on the market; if they combined them all in to one we would have the perfect browser.

Since I've downloaded Opera, I've used it in testing a lot of times, and never had a problem logging in or using the tek-tips site. We never did figure out what the deal was with her browser.... She ended up going to IE....Go figure...:)

Please explain: enable cookie logging or referer logging?
Gary.

Because referers are a major security concern, Opera gives users the option to turn off referers. Using referers is a notoriously bad programming habit. Many third party browsers don't even support referers. The user in question above, more-than-likely had referers turned off.

I find Opera 3.61 far more forgiving of html errors than Netscape, but less than ie.
Note: I have changed security in the new version of Tek-Tips. We no longer use referrers, but rather, a unique token assigned when you log in. Everything seems to be running much smoother now....:)
Doug Trocino
dtrocino@tecumsehgroup.com
<a href= Forums
Web Application Developer
Not to get to much off topic, here, but I do want to say that I really love this new tek-tips design! Everything is just so much nicer now! Not to say it wasn't nice before, but the interface is 100% cleaner, and as you said alot smoother. I haven't tried Tek-Tips with anyt other browsers besides IE5, but it sounds as though your site is cross-browser compatible as well. That is always my main problem when designing a web site. To make it look like the client wants it to look is no problem, but to make it function in all browsers can be a real headache. I finally got Tri Techs web site to work the same in all the browsers, and I know that was a headache. Try using CSS with Netscape, what a pain in the arse. I finally had to go with javascript and mouseover events, rather then the CSS3 that IE5 does so well. This cost me about 40K in download, which equals longer loading times. It still is about the same speed as Yahoo, I think, so I guess it is still acceptable, but I do so love CSS3, talk about FAST! Oh well, maybe in the next version of NS we'll have CSS. I look for NS 5 somewhere around January of 2000. Anyway, keep up the excellent work, here!
Thanks...:) The site is currently working great in IE 3 and up, and pretty good in Netscape.. I'm working on getting a better interface in Netscape, as many of the forms look different in NS than they do in IE..
Doug Trocino
dtrocino@tecumsehgroup.com
<a href= Forums
Web Application Developer
al loks great in NS 4.6 & up; in NS 2.2 it's a real bear though; everything is showing up at around 2.6X magnification again.
-Robherc
robherc@netzero.net

*nix installation & program collector/reseller.
