I noticed under the product rating area that a large portion of the users of OpenView software are in the middle as far as rating the software.

Are there reasons for this? What kinds of issues should I be aware of when investing in these tools?

I also noticed that most people discuss OpenView as a product, when in reality it is a Brand. Are people usually refering to specific OpenView products when discussing OpenView?

thanks,

jr

When people say "Openview" they often seem to be referring to Network Node Manager.

My rating for Openview (And by this I mean Openview Operation for Unix and Windows, Omniback and Service Desk. NNM is for people who know what they're doing -- not me.) is medium. All of the OV products are very functional - they all do pretty much whatever you want. But they tend to be quite hard work as well.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan and I use these products every day.

To get the benefit of something like Microsoft Word you start Word, type in your letter, print it. Job Done, Tick. With the exception of Service Desk the OV products I've used have not been like that. The benefit from using the product is there but you have to put a lot of effort in to get to that benefit.

I would prefer to see more benefit "out of the box" but still retain the ability to customise and fit solutions to individual situations. At the moment I think there's not enough emphasis on making sure the configurations supplied with OVO (in particular) are usable without significant modification. Mike

Thanks Mike,

So it sounds like once you get it configured as you'd like, its a good product?

Would you recommend the Windows or Unix?

cheers,
jr

Hi there jrbranaa, it is a good product indeed, my personal opinion, much better and versatile than Tivoli, Spectrum, etc...

I would also add that once you have the basic configuration running, the limit is your imagination basically (hey,BTW, I´m not an HP Executive, uh?)

As Mike points out, takes a while to have everything properly running and managing network devices, applications, OS, etc...but which product doesn't?

It is particularly stable under HP-UX, don't have much experience with it under Solaris thus, I wouldn't trust Windows 2K/NT for this particular tool (or set of tools), since you need a stable, robust OS, to keep track and management of several flavors of OS, devices, etc...

Hope this helps, regards,

Just finished my first job with OVO/W, so I can't comment (really) yet. My initial thought is the same as vlan's though, that the UNIX version is more stable.

I've used the Solaris and HPUX versions, no difference between them. Mike
