Having phones occasionally go out of service, and I've traced it down to an error that nobody can seem to explain.

This entry is from the log file on the HG3530 (STMI4) card:
Code:
EventLogEntry from TC (WrkThrd02 "10/16/2015 15:08:23.590527" TCClient.cpp 610):
  EventType: Warning
  EventCode: MSG_TC_INTERNAL_EVENT
  EventText: TC_Logoff sent to [8060] 172.17.9.60 with cause 'LOGOFF - No bearer channel could be established'

When this happens, the phone displays a similar error:
"No Telephony possible - HY2"
According to the admin manual for the phone, it means:
Error Condition: "Unable to register HFA main line"
Error Cause: "Logoff: No bearer channel"

System info:
Component Version
Platform V6 R2.14.5
Assistant V6 R2.34.5
RMX V6 R2.14.46
CSTA V1 R13.201.11
SoftGate on Platform L0-T3T.63.004-002
HiPath FM HPFM_4 R3.10.02

Loadware on the card is pzksti40.40.002-002

Can anyone provide any insight as to what might be causing this???

Hi
There is an anomaly whereby you can configure in BFDAT for example just 4 channels for SIP or HFA
Then you can add as many extensions as possible on the card even though you have only 4 channels possible.
The other ones will get that error.
The system does not automatically warn you if you exceed the number of extensions above the value of the available B channels configured on the BFDAT/STMI

To Rectify create or extend a BFDAT suitable for the amount of extensions.
Also on the BCSU ensure you have enough channels added for the extensions - this you can do by CHA-BCSU

To ensure that SIP extensions will work on the HiPath ensure you have
CHA-ZAND:OPTLOAD;

Interesting. I have 2 STMI4's currently setup with 120 lines and 60 b-channels. I was under the impression that you could setup a board with 120 lines and 60 b-channels, thus "oversubscribing" it. I thought the b channels would only be used when the extension was off-hook.

Code:
REGEN-BCSU:1,2,1;
H500:  AMO BCSU  STARTED
ADD-BCSU:IPGW,1,2,1,"Q2324-X500",1,0,3,,60,,,,,0,IPV4,NO,NO;

REGEN-BFDAT:3;
H500:  AMO BFDAT STARTED
ADD-BFDAT:3,HG3530,BCHL60&BCHL120,;
CHA-BFDAT:CONT,3,HG3530,120,,60;
CHA-BFDAT:OK,3,YES;

I'll have to stand up another STMI4 and move some lines off of the other boards onto it. Fingers crossed!

That is correct. You can do that, and as I also found out with my system, you can actually go to 240 phones on a STMI4. HOWEVER, you can only have as many simultaneous calls on that board as the number of B channels. That is referred to as a blocking factor. If 60 phones are already making calls then phones 6 - 120 will get an error tone until a B-channel is free. The designers spend a lot of time (or are at least suppose to) doing traffic review on an existing system that gets upgraded to try and minimize that. On a new system, if they can't study traffic on the old one, it is best estimate based on where the phones are located - they will try to spread sales functions, call centers, etc over multiple boards to reduce the liklihood, and also to provide redundancy for large areas so that one board failure does not take out a whole department.

If you have a lot of high traffic phones on that board you might want to consider moving some of them to other cards in the system and it might help. Basically all you have to do is change the PEN in the station and then change the gateway in the phone (you can do that with WBM so you don't have to leave your desk), or the profile in DLS and you should be good.

The ADD-BCSU above allows you 60 B Channels of 3530 (HFA IP Extensions)
You could incorrectly add that as having for example 10 IP extensions then add 60 to the card, 50 would not get a B Channel

Double check your configuration, if still good then you should escalate it to support

We've only had a maximum of 23 parallel calls on either of our boards. Both setup the same, with 60 b-channels. We've escalated it. After several months, they're suggesting a PBX upgrade. Hoping there was an easier answer than over an hour of downtime to do the upgrade.

An hour?? Giggle.... Although when I updated from V7 R0 to V7 R1 I think we had pretty close to an hour of downtime - it was the other 9 hours of stuff that killed us! :)
