I'm install a new Linux server and I want to install a new version of openssl. The Linux version that I am install is Linux 7.1 and the current OpenSSL version is openssl-0.9.6b-8. The new openssl version is openssl-0.9.6c. The current openssl version is a RPM package but the new openssl version is not; needs to be compile and install. The question are:

1. Is it worth the upgrade?
2. If so, should I uninstall the current openssl rpm package? And if I do, will there be any problems effecting other programs that uses it after removing the package.
3. If such problems exist, is there a solution around it?
4. After remove the rpm package and compiling and installing the new openssl version, all those programs that depends or uses openssl resume to function as usual as though no changes have taken place?

Why not upgrade the rpm way, or isn't it available yet from RedHat? That way you will not lose any dependencies and avoid any possible issues.

Personally I try and avoid the tarball route, there seems to always be a difference in install dirs and eventually everything becomes a confusing mess. IBM Certified Specialist - MQSeries
