OpenRecordset won't work with ODBC table

hows it going

I'm getting "invalid operation", the help file for which is saying that you cant use openrecordset on an odbc table(recordset objects,record collections summary) i find this very strange as i have been using openrecordset on linked tables all the time recently but linked from an AS/400 database as opposed to the usual SQL server, maybe this is a problem , any ideas?
